Great Blog Pro WordPress Theme Download For Free

Let me be straight with you. The free version of Great Blog is fine. It is a clean, fast blog theme. You can install it, write posts, and your site will look decent. But decent is not great. If you want great, you have to pay for Pro. The question is whether you care enough to spend $39 a year. I will tell you exactly what you get and let you decide.

I tested both versions side by side. Same content. Same hosting. Same plugins. Here is what I found.

The Header: Free vs Pro

Free: You get a logo and a menu. That is it. The header is not sticky. It does not change on mobile. It is just there.

Pro: You get a sticky header. A transparent header option. A top bar with social icons and contact info. A search icon in the header. A cart icon if you use WooCommerce. You can also create different headers for different pages.

My take: If you write short posts, sticky header does not matter. If you write long posts, it matters a lot. I write long posts. I need sticky header.

The Blog Layout: Free vs Pro

Free: One layout. A list of posts. Featured image on the left, title and excerpt on the right. That is it.

Pro: Four layouts. List, grid, masonry, and classic. You can choose the number of columns. You can choose whether to show excerpts or full posts. You can choose image sizes.

My take: Grid layout changed my site. People see more posts above the fold. They click more. If you have many posts, grid is better. If you have few posts, list is fine.

The Homepage: Free vs Pro

Free: Your blog archive is your homepage. That is all. No customization.

Pro: You can build a custom homepage with sections. Hero section, featured posts, category grids, newsletter signup, call to action. You arrange them in any order.

My take: I built a custom homepage in about twenty minutes. It looks like a professional magazine. If you want your site to stand out, you need this. If you do not care, free is fine.

The Typography: Free vs Pro

Free: System fonts. Arial, Helvetica, Times. Basic. Boring.

Pro: Over 800 Google Fonts. You can choose a font for headings and a different font for body text. You can adjust font size, line height, and letter spacing.

My take: Fonts matter more than people think. My site looked amateur before I changed the fonts. Now it looks professional. If you care about design, you need Pro.

The Colors: Free vs Pro

Free: A few preset color schemes. You pick one. That is it.

Pro: A color picker for every element. Header background, footer background, link color, button color, hover color. You can match your brand exactly.

My take: My brand colors are specific. The free version had nothing close. I needed Pro. If your brand uses standard colors, maybe free works.

The Sidebar: Free vs Pro

Free: One global sidebar. It shows on every page. You cannot change it.

Pro: Custom sidebars. You can create different sidebars for different categories, posts, or pages. You can also choose to show no sidebar on certain pages.

My take: I wanted a different sidebar on my recipe posts. I created one with Pro. It took five minutes. If you do not need this, free is fine.

The Related Posts: Free vs Pro

Free: Nothing. No related posts. People read one article and leave.

Pro: Related posts section below each post. Shows posts from the same category. Thumbnails and titles.

My take: This increased my page views by about 15%. People click through to more articles. If you want people to stay on your site, you need this.

The Social Share: Free vs Pro

Free: Nothing. No social share buttons.

Pro: Social share buttons below each post. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn. They are lightweight. No external scripts.

My take: I did not think I needed this. Then I added it and my traffic from social went up by 10%. People share my posts now. It helps.

The Performance: Free vs Pro

I tested both on the same hosting. GTmetrix results:

Free: 94% score, 1.3 seconds load time.

Pro: 93% score, 1.4 seconds load time.

The difference is tiny. Pro adds features but does not slow the site much. You will not notice. Your readers will not notice.

What Pro Does Not Have

Pro does not have a dark mode toggle. It does not have a mega menu. It does not have a built-in ad manager. It does not have a page builder. If you need those, look elsewhere. Great Blog is a blog theme, not an everything theme.
