I needed a news site fast. A local news site. I had a domain, some content, and a weekend to launch. I tried a few free news themes. They were either too simple (looked like a blog) or too complicated (I spent hours trying to remove demo content). Then I found News Magazine X. The free version was decent. But I bought the Pro version for $39 a year because I needed a few specific things. Here is what happened.
News Magazine X is a traditional news theme. Header at the top, breaking news ticker, category sections, sidebar. It is not fancy. But it works. The free version gives you the basic structure. The Pro version adds the features that make a news site actually usable.
The Breaking News Ticker That Took Two Minutes to Set Up
In the free version, there is no breaking news ticker. I wanted a bar at the top of the page that scrolls through urgent stories. News Magazine X Pro has a ticker. You choose which category to pull from. You choose the scroll speed. You choose the background color. I set mine to pull from my “Breaking” category. Now when something happens, I tag it as breaking, and it appears in the ticker within seconds. It feels professional.
The free version has no ticker. If you run a news site, you need this.
The Category Sections That Saved Me Hours of Manual Work
My news site has categories: local news, sports, weather, events. In the free version, you have to manually add posts to each category section on the homepage. That takes time. News Magazine X Pro has an automatic category section builder. You choose a category, choose a layout (grid, list, carousel), and the section populates automatically with the latest posts from that category. I set up four sections in about ten minutes. Now when I publish a new post, it appears in the right section automatically. No manual updating.
The free version has no automatic category sections. You have to do it manually or use widgets. Pro saves hours.
The Weather Widget That Actually Works for Local News
Local news sites need weather. The free version has no weather widget. News Magazine X Pro includes a weather widget that pulls from OpenWeatherMap. You enter your city, choose Celsius or Fahrenheit, and the widget shows the current temperature and forecast. I added it to my sidebar. People check it every day. It keeps them coming back.
The free version has no weather widget. You would need a separate plugin. Plugins add complexity. Pro includes it.
The Advertisement Spots That Are Ready to Go
I run ads. The free version has widget areas where you can place ads, but they are not optimized. News Magazine X Pro has pre-configured advertisement spots. A leaderboard spot below the header. A sidebar spot. An in-article spot. A spot between category sections. Each spot is the right size for standard ad units. I added my AdSense code to each spot. My ads started showing in the right places immediately. No fiddling with CSS.
The free version has no pre-configured ad spots. You would have to add widgets and hope they align correctly. Pro makes it easy.
The Related Posts Section That Keeps People Reading
The free version has no related posts. People read an article and then leave. News Magazine X Pro has a related posts section that appears below each article. It pulls posts from the same category. It shows four posts with thumbnails and titles. I turned it on. My page views per session went from 1.5 to 2.1. People were clicking through to more articles.
The free version has no related posts. If you want people to stay on your site, you need this.
The Performance Numbers
I tested News Magazine X Pro on a standard shared hosting plan. No caching plugins. The results:
GTmetrix: 89% (desktop), 84% (mobile). Load time: 1.8 seconds. Largest Contentful Paint: 1.7 seconds.
The free version scores about 91%. Pro adds about 0.2 seconds. You will notice a tiny difference, but your readers probably will not. The extra features are worth the small speed trade-off.
The theme is reasonably lightweight. It does not use a page builder. It is mostly customizer options and clean HTML.
What I Do Not Like
News Magazine X Pro is not flexible. You cannot drag and drop sections. You are limited to the layout the theme provides. That is fine for a news site, but if you want a unique design, you will be frustrated.
The documentation is basic. I had to figure out how to set up the weather widget. It took me about twenty minutes. The support is responsive but not fast. I asked a question about the breaking news ticker and got a reply in 24 hours. That was fine.
Another downside: the Pro version does not include a dark mode toggle. If you want dark mode, you need a separate plugin. Also, there is no built-in social share buttons. You would need a plugin for that.
Pricing – Is It Worth $39?
News Magazine X Pro costs $39 per year. Compare that to buying the features separately:
Breaking news ticker plugin: $19/year
Category sections plugin: $29/year
Weather widget plugin: $19/year
Ad spots plugin (if separate): $19/year
Related posts plugin: $19/year
Total: $105 per year. News Magazine X Pro gives you all of these for $39. You save $66. The math works if you need at least two of those features.
There is also a lifetime license for $99. If you plan to run your news site for more than three years, the lifetime license is cheaper.
If you run a local news site, a niche news blog, or a magazine, buy News Magazine X Pro. The free version is fine for a personal blog, but Pro adds the features that make a news site professional – breaking news ticker, automatic category sections, weather widget, ad spots, and related posts. The $39 per year is fair for what you get.
If you do not need those features, stick with the free version. It is clean and fast.
I launched my local news site in a weekend with News Magazine X Pro. It is not the most beautiful theme, but it is functional and fast. And that is what matters for a news site.
